JoePa 300...The Quest For 300 Wins

300th Win Quiz | Facts On Other Coaches' 300th Win | Fans' Favorite Paternoisms

Celebrating the 300th Win Two of the giants in college football coaching now have something else in common -- 300 career wins.

Former Alabama coach Bear Bryant won his 300th game on Oct. 3, 1980 with a 45-0 pasting of Kentucky in Birmingham. He said at the time, "I was surprised and delighted when one of our captains presented me with the game ball. I'm going to give it to the University. We'll put the score on it and put in the trophy room ... 50 years from now the players can bring their kids by and say they were part of it."

Paterno had these thoughts in August, 1998 before getting his 300th win. "I never thought I would get to 100 to be honest with you. I never thought I would stay in coaching that long. I think anybody who figures on staying in it as long as I have has got to be a little kooky, and maybe that explains it. I have had a great trip. The hard part I have responding to questions such as that is the fact that there is a tremendous tendency to overlook a group of coaches and a bunch of great athletes who have been a part of this thing and the administration has been so supportive through the years. I hate to have people zero in as if this is a personal achievement because it is a program achievement. In that sense, that is great."

But, a month later on Sept. 12, 1998, an emotional Paterno spoke to his players who formed a circle around him and to the 96,000 plus fans who remained in Beaver Stadium after he reached the special milestone.

"I'm so overwhelmed. I can't tell you how filled up I am with memories, people, all the years."

"I've loved every minute of my 48 years at Penn State."

"I've savored every moment over the years."

"I love every one of you. We are ......"

The crowd responded "Penn State."

Ever the coach, Paterno returned to the microphone a few seconds later to say, "One more thing. Now we get to play Pitt."
