Every year, about a thousand Penn
State freshmen begin their college careers by
enrolling during the summer sessions at University
Park campus. They know that even the best students
can benefit by starting early. Just consider what
starting in the summer lets you do...
Start smart...
Special programs are offered only
during the summer and only for new students.
They allow you to focus on a specific academic
field, learn and live in a team setting, explore
your academic and career choices, or experience
an outdoor adventure. And in addition to these
special programs, you'll find a wide range of
regular Penn State courses readily available
to help you get a head start.
Start small...
About 12,000 students are on campus
in the summer, compared with about 40,000 in
the fall. So classes are generally smaller in
the summer, and it's easier to get to know people.
And by taking only two or three classes, you'll
learn about the challenges of college-level
work in a more relaxed environment.
Learn the ropes...
Learning to use the University
libraries and computer labs will be crucial
to your academic success. You'll find plenty
of help as you get familiar with these resources.
Many students say it's easier to learn your
way around campus in the summer. When fall classes
start, you won't need a map. You might even
want to become an Orientation Assistant for
new students who arrive in the fall.
Have fun...
Starting college in the
summer means no vacation, right? Not quite.
Summer at University Park is packed with fun
and relaxing things to do. Take in a concert
or outdoor movie. Check out the pools, tennis
courts, golf courses, or skating rink. Enjoy
an ice cream cone at the Creamery. And for five
days in July, experience the Central Pennsylvania
Festival of the Arts. Hundreds of artists come
to Arts Fest, bringing visual arts, film, music,
dance, and other performances.
