Criminal Justice

Start and Finish at: Penn State Altoona

The associate degree in criminal justice allows you to:

  • Prepare for a career in criminal justice
  • Learn about areas necessary for careers in modern criminal justice--computers, statistics, ethics, social research, and multicultural issues.
  • Transfer to a bachelor's degree program within or outside of the Penn State system.
Nationwide, criminal justice is a labor-intensive growth industry; careers in criminal justice, especially corrections, continue to show strong growth. According to Pennsylvania Workforce 2000, two of the major employment areas for criminal justice majors, legal services and protective services, will provide many more opportunities in the future.

In Pennsylvania, legal services occupations are expected to grow by 11,100 positions between 1990 and 2000, and paralegal employment is expected to increase by more than 40 percent. Protective services occupations are expected to expand by six percent, for a total of 3,175 job openings during the 10-year period. Corrections officers and jailers, detectives and investigators, and guards show the strongest growth trends within protective services occupations.
