The associate degree in Mining Technology prepares graduates for entry-level supervisory positions in the underground coalmining industry. The program exposes students not only to high technology used in today's long-wall and continuous mining processes, but also to the complex management and regulatory issues that must be considered to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the workers while producing a high-quality product at low production cost.
Students can choose between two emphases in the program. The Production emphasis prepares students for management positions in the mine, with courses in management, regulatory issues, and ventilation and roof support systems. The Maintenance emphasis prepares students more for technical support management, with courses in electrical power supply, motor wiring safety, and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
