American Studies

Penn State offers several degrees in American Studies, each of which is completed at a different location.

American Studies at Penn State Abington
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Abington.

This major has successfully launched graduates into a variety of careers and graduate programs. A liberal arts degree with a focus on American culture, the program allows students to explore literature, history, art, philosophy, economics, sociology, and other academic disciplines while providing an interdisciplinary perspective on our civilization. The critical thinking required in the major helps students develop their analytical communication skills. Students may combine the American Studies major with a minor such as English, history, or business. American studies graduates often find jobs in social and human services, the media, government, business, industry, and not-for-profit institutions such as museums, historical societies, and preservation agencies.

The B.A. degree in American Studies is offered at Penn State's Abington College .

American Studies at Penn State Berks
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Berks, or Lehigh Valley.

This major offers students a liberal arts education with a critical focus on the American experience. The major provides students an interdisciplinary perspective on the American experience through courses in American studies, American literature and history, communication arts and sciences, sociology, theatre, and other areas; many of these emphasize multicultural perspectives. The American Studies major also provides opportunities for internships, research projects, and study abroad. Students are encouraged to meet with an adviser early in their academic program to design a program that will help them meet their career goals, whether these include graduate school, professional school (such as law school), or other careers.

The B.A. degree in American Studies is offered at Penn State's Berks College and University College.

American Studies at Penn State Harrisburg
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Harrisburg.

The undergraduate humanities programs at Penn State's Capital College focus on the study of the ideas, values, and artistic legacies of Western culture and civilization. While the major disciplines of art, communications, history, literature, music, and philosophy are represented, the emphasis is on interdisciplinary studies. Students have many opportunities for individualized study. The core curriculum provides a common intellectual experience for all humanities students and establishes a foundation for the study of Western and non-Western cultures. Small classes, an outstanding multidisciplinary faculty, and an excellent location for valuable internship experiences are just some of the program's features. Students interested in American culture and history may select this interdisciplinary major for personal enrichment or as preparation for careers in museums, government, law, communications, or education.

The B.A. degree in American Studies is offered at Penn State's Capital College.
