Penn State offers four degrees in biology, each of which is completed at a different location.
Biology at Penn State University Park
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State University Park.
One of Penn State's most popular majors, the Biology major focuses on the study of life. This major emphasizes understanding species and their genetics, development, evolution, and interaction with an everchanging environment. The Biology major can help students prepare for advanced training in graduate and professional schools, or serves as a broad education with an emphasis on the life sciences. Options are offered in Ecology, General Biology, Genetics and Developmental Biology, Plant Biology, Neuroscience, and Vertebrate Physiology.
The B.S. in Biology is offered by Penn State's Eberly College of Science.
Biology at Penn State Abington
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State Abington.
Penn State Abington's Biology degree with the Vertebrate Physiology option combines cutting-edge theory and hands-on laboratory training with small class sizes and individualized attention. Students learn the latest advances in a variety of relevant areas of biology including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular and developmental biology, histology, genetics, neurobiology, endocrinology, and immunology. This major is appropriate for students interested in medicine, dentistry, pharmacology, veterinary medicine, medically-related research, and graduate study. Adding courses in areas such as education, business, and technical writing is also possible. These additional areas could benefit students interested in careers in teaching, pharmaceutical sales, and clinical writing for pharmaceutical companies.
Many students have participated in research experiences and become published with award-winning campus faculty. Faculty presently have projects underway in the fields of neurophysiology, marine biology, developmental biology, and breast cancer research.
The B.S. in Biology is offered by Penn State's Abington College.
Biology at Penn State Altoona
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State Altoona.
The Biology major is for students seeking knowledge in biological science. The program's broad approach results in an educated view of the structure and function of living things. With this degree, students may choose graduate school, work for governmental agencies or industries with biological emphasis, or opt for careers in medicine or other health-related professions. The six options are Plant Biology, Ecology, General Biology, Genetics and Developmental Biology, Neuroscience, and Vertebrate Physiology.
