All English majors explore, through literature, a wide range of human experience and values. They learn how to gather, analyze, and synthesize information. They receive substantial practice in the techniques of research and writing by studying with faculty who include internationally noted literary critics and scholars, novelists and poets, rhetoricians and linguists, and business and technical writers.

The B.A. degree in English is offered by Penn State's College of the Liberal Arts.

Studying English can provide students with highly marketable skills in critical thinking, writing, and reading, and in analyzing and synthesizing data. It can help students understand human nature, our cultural and historical roots, and the need for making humane decisions in an increasingly technical age. Students may choose a complementary minor, such as Business, History, Psychology, American Studies, or Science.

English at Penn State Altoona
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Altoona.

The English major can provide students with highly marketable skills in critical thinking, writing, verbal communication, and research. The major offers emphases in literature or writing. Students can incorporate a writing portfolio into their course of study, which will generate written examples of their work for prospective graduate schools or employers. All students complete the capstone seminar, in which they research and write a publishable paper that draws on their particular field of study. Internships allow students to discover whether or not a particular field is right for them and to develop skills and knowledge that many gain only after graduation.

Students explore the imaginative and practical uses of English through courses in literature, writing, rhetoric, and language. They develop perspectives on human nature and cultural values through American, British, and other English literatures; learn how to gather, analyze, synthesize, and communicate information; and gain mastery over their language. These skills help English majors find careers in such fields as publishing, business, industry, government, and teaching. English majors ofteng go on to postgraduate study in not only English but also such areas as law, business, education, and other liberal disciplines. Majors can emphasize writing, literature, or rhetoric, or a mix of the three. Qualified students may participate in the career internship and English honors program.

English at Penn State Erie

Whether interested in literary analysis or in writing plays, poetry, science fiction, magazine articles, mysteries, short stories, or screenplays, English majors can receive practical training from experienced faculty. Options are available in either literature or creative writing to obtain a bachelor of arts degree. Graduates with English majors and minors are hired because of their training in writing, research, and interpretation--skills that are becoming more desired in government, business, and industry. Teaching opportunities are also increasing in many areas of the nation. Jobs held by Penn State's Behrend College English graduates include sales manager, newspaper editor, secondary teacher, college instructor, book and film reviewer, and military communications specialist.

English at Penn State Harrisburg
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Harrisburg.

The English major offers students the unique opportunity to study literature in an interdisciplinary context where the relationships among literature and art, history, music, philosophy, media, and American studies can be investigated. The major offers courses in American, British, and world literatures, emphasizing their cultural and historical contexts as well as teaching students to interpret them from a variety of critical perspectives. Small classes in both creative and expository writing encourage students to develop their writing skills by working closely with faculty. With its emphases on interpretive skills, creativity, and writing, the major provides a foundation for careers in such fields as teaching, publishing, public relations, communication, government, and law as well as a strong basis for graduate education. Students interested in earning teaching certification in Secondary Education/English should consult with the School of Behavioral Sciences and Education at Penn State's Capital College.
