Penn State offers several degrees in mathematics, each of which is completed at a different location.
Mathematics at Penn State University Park
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State University Park.
The study of mathematics goes far beyond the algebra,
geometry, and trigonometry taught in high school. At Penn State, Mathematics
students focus on the basics of analysis and algebra, together with topology,
number theory, logic, numerical analysis, dynamical systems, and differential
equations. Options for the B.S. are Actuarial Mathematics, Applied Analysis,
Computational Mathematics, General Mathematics, Graduate Study, Systems
Analysis, and Teacher Certification. In addition to traditional employment
opportunities in science, technology, and industry, jobs in actuarial sciences,
systems analysis, and financial mathematics are expected to grow rapidly.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Co-op program to gain
work and research experience.
The B.S. and B.A. in Mathematics are offered by Penn State's Eberly College of Science.
Mathematics at Penn State Altoona
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Altoona.
This program offers a B.A. or B.S. in mathematics. The degrees share a common core of mathematics courses. While both programs prepare students for graduate work in mathematics, the B.A. degree is oriented toward applications of mathematics in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, while the B.S. degree has a number of options which lean toward actuarial science, applied analysis, computational mathematics, and systems analysis. Many of the options are designed for students who want to use mathematics in industry, commerce, or government.
The B.S. and B.A. in Mathematics are offered by Penn State's Altoona College .
Mathematics at Penn State Erie
This program may be started at any campus and is completed only at Penn State Erie.
Students choose from four options. The Computer Science
option includes courses in systems programming, computer graphics, COBOL, and
data structures. The Applied Mathematics option includes courses in analysis,
numerical methods, linear programming, statistics, and operations research. The
Business option requires a broad base of statistics and computer courses in
addition to courses in accounting, insurance, economics, management, and
management information systems. The Education Pre-Certification option is for
students interested in pursuing further studies with an emphasis on education or
who plan to enter a teacher certification program after graduation. The options
allow students to concentrate on developing skills suitable for entry-level
positions in computer programming, applied mathematics, actuarial sciences,
statistics, or operations research; careers in government, business, or
industry; or graduate study.
The B.S. in Mathematics is offered by Penn State's Behrend College.
