This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State University Park.
Mining Engineers examine and assess the value of mineral deposits, plan and design new mining operations, and manage and operate mines in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. As a result, they also deal with miner health and safety, the protection and preservation of property, and the reclamation of affected ecological systems. Course work focuses on underground and surface mining methods, strata control, materials handling, mine ventilation, cost analysis, and computer applications. Career opportunities include mining operations in aggregates, coal, and a variety of industrial minerals. Recent students have also pursued graduate studies in mining engineering, other fields of engineering, business, and law.
The B.S. in Mining Engineering is offered by Penn State's College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
