This major is started and completed only at Penn State University Park.
The Musical Theatre program at Penn State is a professional training program offered by the School of Theatre and supported by the School of Music. To ensure individualized training, admission is highly selective. Students accepted into the Musical Theatre program embark on a rigorous four year course of studies which is designed to prepare the student for direct entry into the professional world or graduate school. This B.F.A. degree requires a minimum of 127 credits. Faculty, all of whom are both professional artists and teachers, provide excellent training in theatre, music, dance and voice. Studying at Penn State also provides students with the opportunity to attain a broad based general education.
Penn State faculty understand that not all students are equal, and while the aim is to train the “triple threat,” the Musical Theatre program is designed to heighten individual artistic strengths. Faculty work to enhance unique qualities in each individual student and train artists that are self-reliant and able to contribute to the highly competitive world of musical theatre.
The B.F.A. in Musical Theatre is organized into five categories; general education, theatre, music, dance, and music theatre. Beyond the 45 credits in general education required of all Penn State students, Musical Theatre candidates take a minimum of 32 credits in Theatre (acting, speech and movement, costume, lighting or scenery crafts, design, history, directing, and practicum). The core training centers around 16 credits in musical theatre. Students will take an introductory course, four performance studios, and the history of American musical theatre. Required dance training includes 15 credits in ballet, jazz, tap, and musical theatre styles. Music theatre candidates take 25 credits in voice, theory and musicianship, ensemble vocal performance and keyboard skills.
Performance opportunities include fully produced musical productions, workshop productions, and staged readings of new work. Students also perform in concerts, recitals, and juries. Seniors present a showcase in New York City for the industry.
Besides traditional forms of financial aid, all candidates admitted into Musical Theatre are eligible for endowed Musical Theatre scholarships.
The B.F.A. in Musical Theatre is offered by Penn State's College of Arts and Architecture.
