| Assignment: The Singer of Tales | Due: Saturday, 05 February |
| Overview According to Albert B. Lord, epic composition is an oral
process by which the singer uses various formulae,
adapted to the prevailing meter. Bards (griots) do not
learn epics by heart, but familiarize themselves with
meters, rhythms, and formulae which are repeated
over and over again in various combinations. |
|
| This
exercise asks you to identify formulae in the
three epics we have read. You will probably find it
useful to have your anthology handy: (Note: For questions 1, 2, and 4, review book VIII of the Odyssey) Some of the
answer possibilities may not fit in the text area. To
read the whole choice, click in the text area and use the
right arrow key to move to the end of the text. |
