Overview

For this assignment, you will be working individually to select one poem to analyze. First you will read some introductory material explaining the sounds of poetry. Then you will have a chance to "specialize," choosing a particular language to work with and familiarizing yourself with the ways that language tradition structures its verse forms.

After absorbing this information, you will then hear a poem (from a list provided) in its original language, and you will have the chance to listen to audio files to hear how the poem sounds when read aloud in its original language.

Upon reviewing the poem, you will need to complete some questions on-line (on verse forms, syllable count, etc.).  You won't be graded for your answers to these questions. However, your answers will serve as key information for a detailed interpretation you will write, which you will submit for a grade.

Before you select a poem to review, determine the language with which you are most comfortable.  To hear how the languages sound spoken aloud, click on the buttons below. Then click "Continue with the Assignment."

I would like to hear how the following language(s) sound:

Japanese

 Chinese

German

Spanish

French

Italian
