About
Welcome.
The Penn State Department of Communication Arts and Sciences is a center of excellence in teaching, research, and service.
We currently serve over 200 undergraduate majors. Each year the Department provides instruction to over 7,000 Penn State students, from introductory courses in public speaking to advanced seminars in health communication, interpersonal communication, rhetoric, public discourse, and other areas in rhetorical studies and communication sciences. Our faculty and graduate students are among the best in the nation, consistently receiving awards and other forms of recognition from the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association. Members of the Department connect to the world in broader ways ranging from the Katrina Relief Fund to mock debates presented by CAS100 studentsto State College High School students.
The department has a long and distinguished history in the College of the Liberal Arts at Penn State, and a record of leadership in the discipline. I urge you to explore this web site to find out about the dramatic changes that have taken place in the Department over the last few years. Across the top of this page you will see the standard academic web site categories: Alumni, Undergraduate, Graduate, People and Research. Below that are topic headings that provide more information about specific events and issues. You can see where our recent Ph.Ds are working, read the blogs of students in our study abroad programs, and view the awards ceremonies. The Photo Gallery captures the beauty of Happy Valley throughout the year.
