Urban Service Experience

Make new friends! Work outside! Make a difference! Incoming students who are beginning their college career in the summer or fall of 2009 are invited to sign up for Urban Service Experience, a six-day precollege program that begins and ends at the University Park campus. Students will either meet us in Philadelphia or will be transported by van to Philadelphia for an opportunity to participate in community service, learn more about social issues, and meet other incoming students (in small groups of ten).

Students will stay in a nearby hostel. Community service typically involves working outdoors in urban gardening programs and local parks, and it also includes a day of service at a local food bank. Evening activities include presentations, public programs, nightly meetings, spending quality time with your group members, and enjoying a final celebration cookout.

Registration and Fees

Urban Service Experience is a 2-credit course (RPTM 297C). To receive credit, students must successfully complete the six-day program, turn in assignments, and attend a one-evening follow-up session in October. Participants are responsible for a program fee, in addition to the appropriate tuition.

2009 Program Dates

  • July 26 – 31
  • August 2 – 7
