UAC Historical Perspective
The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 requires that no qualified
individual with a disability shall, on the basis of that disability, be
excluded from participating in or be denied the benefits of the programs,
services, or use of facilities or be subject to any discrimination. This
is a continuation of University efforts under the 1973 Rehabilitation
Act, Section 504.
There may be situations where the ADA requires the University to remove
structural barriers in order to achieve program and service accessibility.
To achieve this objective, a comprehensive survey of facilities and programs
was conducted to determine if any programs and services are adversely
impacted by structural barriers. Academic and support facilities have
been surveyed at University Park and other campus locations. This survey
included 626 major buildings totaling more than 18 million gross square
feet. Additionally, as situations affecting current faculty, staff, and
students with disabilities are identified, UAC will review those situations
on a case-by-case basis.
