What are the most important
factors Penn State takes into consideration
when making an admissions decision?
The two most important factors
are high school grade point average (approximately
2/3 of the academic evaluation is based on this)
and SATI/ACT standardized test scores (approximately
1/3 of the academic evaluation is based on this).
There is no fixed cut-off for test scores or
grades that guarantee admission.
What other factors may
be used in making an admissions decision?
We also consider information
from the listing of extracurricular activities
as well as the personal statement. A portfolio,
audition, interview, or special talent may be
required for some programs.
What should the student
put in the personal statement?
While the personal statement
is not required, it provides an opportunity to
learn more about the applicant. Rather than restate
personal activities and academic achievements,
we suggest providing additional information that
is not reflected in any other part of the application
or credentials.
Is it better to provide
a weighted or unweighted grade point average?
Penn State recognizes that
some schools will use more than one grading scale
to reflect varying degrees of academic challenge
across the curriculum. We prefer to use the weighted
GPA because we feel that schools have identified
the courses within their curriculum that are
more rigorous. The weighted GPA more accurately
reflects student performance and the demands
of the curriculum. In our review of applicants
with unweighted GPA's, any student who has completed
or is completing honors and/or AP courses is
given a positive factor based on the cumulative
class rank. Based on the counselor page that
is provided as a part of the application, we
consider the maximum grade-point average that
a student can earn in the "regular" or academic/college
prep track as comparable to a 4.0 = A scale.
Is rank in class used
for other purposes besides admission?
No, class rank is not used
for other purposes.
Does your state, county,
or institution mandate a minimum rank in class
for admission?
No minimum class rank is
mandated by Pennsylvania, individual counties
in Pennsylvania, or by Penn State.
What percentage of your
applicants are unranked?
On average, 17 percent are unranked.
Is there a wait list?
Typically, Penn State does
not use a wait list.
