Use the data below as a guide in estimating first-year eligibility. Grade-point averages in the ranges are based on a 4.0 scale. Remember that these figures are intended to give you a general idea of a student's admissibility to Penn State. The ranges represent the middle 50 percent of students offered admission for fall 2003. They are not cutoffs or averages.
Keep in mind that approximately two-thirds of the academic evaluation for each student is based upon high school credentials, and approximately one-third is based on standardized test scores and other considerations. There is a direct relationship between these two factors in all our admissions decisions. Placing in the upper end of both the grade-point and standardized testing ranges increases the likelihood of being offered a first choice of campus and/or major. Placing in the lower end of both ranges may require a student to be more flexible in making campus (and sometimes, major) choices. Occasionally, a high grade-point average may slightly offset a lower standardized test score.
