Penn State offers several degrees in computer science, each of which is completed at a different location.
Computer Science at Penn State University Park
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State University Park.
The Computer Science undergraduate major at Penn State has two phases. In the first two years, studies include structured programming languages, the concepts of modern computer science, and efficient, productive programming. In the junior and senior years, studies include data structures, programming languages, and computer systems in detail. The curriculum is organized with two goals in mind. First, graduates should be prepared to meet immediate demands in solving computational problems. Second, graduates should have sufficient understanding of basic principles and concepts to avoid technological obsolescence in the rapidly changing computer environment.
The B.S. in Computer Science is offered by Penn State's College of Engineering.
Computer Science at Penn State Erie
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State Erie.
This major builds on a firm foundation of computer science, mathematics, and natural science, and gives students an opportunity for careers in high-technology business and industry, or for further education at the graduate level. Students begin the Computer Science major with core courses in programming, discrete math, scientific computing, and computer organization. The upper-division program continues with data structures, design and analysis, operating systems, programming language fundamentals, graphics and visualization, and numerical methods. The major requires completion of an eight-credit physics sequence, four credits in biology or chemistry, and an additional nine credits of science supporting courses chosen by the student. Internships and student research are encouraged. Graduates of the program often go on to a wide variety of computer-oriented careers in business, industry, and government, as well as graduate study in computer science or computationally intensive sub-disciplines of the natural sciences.
The B.S. in Computer Science is offered by Penn State's Behrend College.
Computer Science at Penn State Harrisburg
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State Harrisburg.
This program is designed to help students prepare for employment as computer scientists in engineering, scientific, industrial, and business environments as software developers, programmers, and systems analysts.Tbe Computer Science major provides a solid foundation in the areas of systems programming, algorithm design, artificial intelligence, and engineering large software systems using state-of-the-art methodologies and programming languages. While most students will enter the job market directly upon graduation, graduate school in computer science or related areas is also an option. Students who pursue the latter path can select electives that are tailored to their individual goals.
The B. S. in Computer Science is offered by Penn State's Capital College.
