Penn State offers two distinct paths for those students who want to earn a baccalaureate degree in nursing.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State University Park. First-year students must apply directly to Nursing during the admissions process. Recommended filing date for the complete application is November 30.
The baccalaureate degree program offers a broad liberal arts and science foundation as well as an extensive range of nursing courses. Students gain valuable clinical experience in hopsitals (including Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center), community health agencies, and other health care settings. Nursing admits first-year students directly into the major. An admitted licensed practical nurse may be eligible to earn up to 6 credits by portfolio for previous nursing course work. Graduates of the baccalaurate program qualify to sit for the national examination for licensure as registered professional nurses (NCLEX), and will be prepared for nursing careers in hospitals, private practice, nursing homes, clinics, entry-level administration, and other settings.
Registered nurses can earn a baccalaureate degree (RN to BS) through full- or part-time study while maintaining their current employment and personal responsibilities. Interested RN's can enroll at Altoona, Fayette, Harrisburg, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Schuylkill, University Park, and Worthington Scranton campuses, or online through World Campus.
The School of Nursing's baccaluareate degree program is approved by The Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006, (212) 363-5555, and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington DC 20036, (202) 887-6791.
The B.S. in Nursing is offered by Penn State's College of Health and Human Development.
RN/BS Program
This program may be started at any campus and is completed at Penn State Altoona, Fayette, Harrisburg, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Schuylkill, Shenango, University Park or Worthington Scranton.
The RN to BS nursing program prepares registered nurses (RN) to meet the many changes in the health care field by expanding and enhancing their nursing education. The program, which requires 120 credits, is open to nurses who have previously earned either an associate degree or a diploma in nursing. In addition to upgrading skills, the program prepares RNs for non-traditional areas of nursing such as administration, pharmaceutical sales, managed care, and insurance. The RN to BS program is designed to build on what the RN has already accomplished.
All RN students with a current RN license are given 33 credits by portfolio toward the required 120 credits required for a BS degree. Minimal fees are assessed for placement of portfolio credits on the Penn State transcript.
The School of Nursing's B.S. degree is approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), 61 Broadway, New York, NY 10006 (212-363-5555) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036 (202) 877-6791.
