How to get a tutor, step by step

Learning Resources Center

Penn State Altoona

(Updated 01/10/2008)

Tutoring hours will begin on Monday, January 21, 2008.

for Math 3-250

Look at the schedules for drop-in hours first.

The schedules for drop-in hours are available early in each semester—check back for updates, because schedules can change. Make sure you hit “reload” to get the most current schedule. You should use drop-in hours if at all possible. This can save time by avoiding problems with phone tag, conflicts in schedules, and so forth.  The schedules are at http://www.psu.edu/dept/altoonalrc/prosch.html (for professional tutors).

If you can use drop-in hours, just drop in.

If you want to see one of the tutors during his or her drop-in hours, you do not need an appointment. Simply stop by the tutor’s office during the scheduled drop-in hours. Of course, you will have to wait for your turn if other students are there.

If you can’t use drop-in hours, check the list of courses for which we have tutoring.

We have peer tutors available by appointment for SP08 math courses. Please follow the instructions at http://www.psu.edu/dept/altoonalrc/crslist.html to request a peer tutor.

if we don’t have any tutors for your course

1.

2.      Discuss problems with your professor.

3.      Organize a study group.

4.      Consult a study skills tutor. Request one by using the form at http://www.psu.edu/dept/altoonalrc/crslist.html

5.      Review the study skills links at the LRC home page: http://www.psu.edu/dept/altoonalrc/urls.htm

6.      Consider tutorial software. Does your textbook have a CD or website? These can be very helpful.

7.

If you have questions about the LRC, contact Paula Ford by e-mail (pxf3 at psu dot edu) or at 949-5112.
