Internationalization of a College Newspaper:  The Case of Ke Alaka‘i
Chiung Hwang Chen

Ke Alaka‘i, the student newspaper at the Brigham Young University-Hawaii, has embarked on an experiment in cross-cultural communication.  It is attempting to transition from an American-oriented student newspaper into one that reflects the wide diversity of the audience on campus.  Practical problems and intercultural/philosophical difficulties have accompanied the transition.  Of most immediate concern is the problem of agreeing on what news is.  This essay highlights possibilities and problems involved with questioning traditional definitions of news in training future journalists.  Specifically, it examines the tension between increasing the multicultural emphasis of the newspaper and sustaining operations in the newsroom.k
