Michael
S. Shaw, M.D., is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of new media application
in health care education. Dr. Shaw was an educator and filmmaker prior
to entering medical school at Emory University in 1971. His stated
desire at that time was to bring more effective communication technology
to the field of medical communication. After training in internal medicine,
Dr. Shaw spent three years at the National Institutes of Health/National
Library of Medicine, where he served as a consultant to professional organizations
and consumer education groups in the development of educational media programs.
After leaving
NIH, Dr. Shaw founded a medical education company and produced more than
400 professional and patient education programs, including 7 national PBS
specials. He worked with a variety of groups within NIH, regarding development
of educational programs, including the Human Genome Project, the National
Institute of Mental Health and National Asthma Education Programs.
He also developed the professional educational media components for the
launch of more than 20 major pharmaceutical products, including Viagra,
Celebrex, Cozaar and Rezulin. Dr. Shaw has received nearly 100 major
industry awards and is one of the few physicians elected to the prestigious
Director’s Guild of America.
In addition
to serving as Executive Director of EthicAd, a not-for-profit organization
committed to providing the consumer with substantive, understandable and
reliable information about pharmaceutical products. Dr. Shaw serves on
a number of boards in medical education and media, and as a consultant
in professional education as president of Intermed Media in Atlanta, Georgia.
