 The Armillary Sphere

An armillary sphere is an ancient astronomical instrument consisting of a set of rings surrounding a sphere representing the Earth. It is used to show the position of the rising and setting sun.

The armillary sphere on the front lawn of Old Main at the University Park campus was the inspiration for the graphic designed by Jason Tremblay (B.A., Integrative Arts, 2000) for the DUS home page. The bronze sphere, which rests on the back of a tortoise on top of a forty-inch-high limestone base, is four feet in diameter. It was a gift of the class of 1966, which contributed $6,200 towards its purchase.
