Q: My email address has changed. How do I change my
FINAID-L subscription address?
A: Listserv identifies you as a subscriber to FINAID-L by the email address
used by you when you first subscribed. In order to communicate with
Listserv in any fashion (posting, unsubscribing, etc), the email address being
generated by your email client must match exactly the address by which you are
subscribed to FINAID-L. There are three ways to change your subscription
address:
- Unsubscribe from FINAID-L from your "old" email client, then
resubscribe from your new email client. This method presumes you
have access to both email accounts.
- Issue the CHANGE command to Listserv to request the address change.
a. Issue the following command to Listserv@lists.psu.edu,
substituting the appropriate values for your old and new addresses.
This method also presumes you have access to both old and new accounts:
CHANGE FINAID-L myuserid@myoldaddress.edu myuserid@mynewaddress.edu
Listserv will send an email to your NEW address, asking that you
confirm your request by replying with an OK.
- Contact the listowners (Finaid-l-request@lists.psu.edu)
and one of us will take care of it for you.
Q: When I attempt to post to FINAID-L, I'm told that I'm
not subscribed, yet I am receiving postings everyday. What's up with
that?
A: In all likelihood, you have experienced an email address change
and Listserv is unable to recognize you. It is perfectly normal that you
will continue to receive email via your old email address, even though
Listserv cannot recognize you as a subscriber when you try to post.
Follow the instructions for changing your FINAID-L subscription address.
Q: I have not received any FINAID-L postings in a long
time. Is there something wrong?
A: FINAID-L is a fairly active list, generating 20+ mail messages each
business day. Therefore, any break in that activity should be
interpreted by you as a problem somewhere.
When FINAID-L mail is undeliverable to you for any reason, it is returned
to the listowners. We receive one bounce for each attempted email
delivery for each subscriber account experiencing difficulty. At any
given time, we have a dozen or more subscribers who are unable to receive
their mail. We most often attempt to make contact with them, but it is
usually difficult to do so depending upon the nature of the problem itself.
Our action at this point is to suspend (turn off) the subscription for the
individual and hope that s/he will contact us at the point s/he notices the
lack of FINAID-L mail.
Recommended action: Contact the listowners (Finaid-l-request@lists.psu.edu).
Q: What's a Bounce?
From the Listserv List Owner's Manual:
"A bounce is simply an undeliverable e-mail message. The term
"bounce" is used to describe it because normally the system that
discovers the delivery error "bounces" a copy of the message back to
you with some sort of delivery error message."
Q: Can I tell who else is subscribed to FINAID-L?
Not exactly. There is a command called REVIEW which allows a subscriber
to review the list of subscribers to a particular list. However, we have
the command disabled in order to protect you as best we can from being targeted
for solicitation. If you are looking for someone who you think might be
subscribed to FINAID-L, please contact the listowners and we will consider your
request.
Q:
What's the difference between a "List" and a "Listserv"?
LISTSERV® is a registered trademark owned by L-Soft International Inc for
their software product that manages mailing lists. A list then is a
group of subscribers (which could also be other lists) who receive from and
sometimes contribute postings to a particular topical discussion area.
It is proper to refer to FINAID-L as "the FINAID-L List", but
technically improper to call it the "FINAID-L Listserv".
