Following are policies to which we ask our FINAID-L subscribers to adhere:

Messages to FINAID-L are to be kept "on topic"; that is, they should be related to the Administration of Financial Aid.

"Job Wanted" postings are not permitted.  Rather, we suggest that you reflect your availability in your signature area.  For example:

    Advisor position sought:  www.myschool.edu/sallys_resume.html

"Position Available" postings are permitted.

Virus messages, email scams, and the like are not permitted.  In general, our individual organizations should have policies in place to deal with these threats (virus software, for example).  FINAID-L doesn't need to be the vehicle for those types of announcements.

Exception: If your information regarding a threat has specific and direct bearing on the Financial Aid community, please contact the listowners for posting clearance.

Postings in excess of 200 lines are rejected.  Shorten the message, or provide a URL in the body of the message to point to other relevant information.

Postings with attachments are rejected, with the exception of "plain text" attachments.

The FINAID-L Digest is generated each night at 11:55 p.m.  If collective lines of postings on a particular day exceed 1750, the Digest is generated immediately, and also at the scheduled time.

Replies to a message distributed via FINAID-L are set to default back to the poster of the original message.  You can redirect your reply to all of FINAID-L, as appropriate, by manipulating the TO: address in your message.

TEST messages are not permitted.  If you want to assess the status of your subscription, try using the Query command as described in Useful Commands.  If you are in need of further assistance, please contact the listowners.

The FINAID-L Mission Statement specifies that the list is not to be used for business purposes.  Implicit in this statement is advertising.  For-profit entities are not permitted to use FINAID-L as a vehicle for advertising their products or services.  This includes products and services for which there is no cost.  Non-profit entities and governmental agencies may post announcements regarding their products and services, as long as they are applicable to Financial Aid Administration.

Subscriptions for individuals whose email is bouncing will be suspended (or deleted) and an attempt made to contact the site postmaster will be made in most cases.  Since bouncing email is evidence of a problem somewhere, we are oftentimes unable to make contact with your postmaster.  Therefore, the only awareness you may have of the situation may be the absence of FINAID-L postings in your mailbox everyday.  Contact the listowners if you feel you have been suspended.

Subscriptions for individuals whose email is generating an "autoreply" indicating their absence from work and is directed to either all of FINAID-L, the listowners, or the individual subscribers, will be suspended with notification.  It is recommended that you unsubscribe or suspend your subscription using the NOMAIL command prior to your absence.
