  1. What is AskPSU?

AskPSU is a service that enables Web support staff in colleges, departments, and organizations to create and customize one or more Web forms that will direct inquiries to the appropriate contacts in your organization.

  2. Who is allowed to apply for an AskPSU form?

Penn State colleges, departments, and organizations are eligible to apply for an AskPSU form. A Penn State Access Account is required.

  3. How do I apply for an AskPSU form?

    To apply:

Detailed instructions on applying for an AskPSU form can also be found on the How to Apply for an Form web page at http://ask.psu.edu/apply.html.
  4. What is the URL of my form?

When you request a form, we ask you for the complete name of your organization and a suggested abbreviation that becomes part of your form's URL (Web address). For example, if you request a form for the Chemistry Department, the abbreviation "chem" would be a good choice. The URL in this case would be http://ask.psu.edu/chem.html. The server is case-sensitive, so it is best to have your abbreviation all in lowercase.

  5. Can people from outside of Penn State send messages using this form?

Yes. Anyone can use your form to send messages to the e-mail addresses you have indicated.

  6. How do I change my form?

Please see the tutorial for instructions.

  7. I accidently deleted part of my form. Can I get my old version back?

No. When you complete the fields for your forms, you are entering information into a database. A database cannot "undo" your changes. Any information you delete will be permanently erased and lost from the database. Therefore, be very careful as you alter your information.

However, you can easily update your form to include the lost information. You may want to make a list of your topics with their associated e-mail addresses, your introductory information and response, and any other pertinent information in a separate text file as a backup.

  8. Is there a limit to the number of items in the topics list?

No. However, only six items can be displayed at a time. A good design question, therefore, is how much scrolling you would want your audience to do. More than twenty will probably be excessive.

  9. Can I include stylized text (bold, italics, and so on) on the AskPSU form?

Yes. You can add HTML tags that control font characteristics such as bold face and font color, to the "Postcard Text" and "Additional Information" fields on the Update screen, and they will affect how these messages appear. For a list of basic tags, see Webmonkey's HTML reference.

  10. I'd like the form to prompt for additional information. Can I customize it to do that?

Yes. You can also write a hyperlink into the "Postcard Text" and "Additional Information" fields on the Update screen, and these links will work when messages show up.

  11. I'd like my colleague to be able to update my AskPSU form. How do give them access?

You can add Authorized Users to your form, following the instructions that can be found on the AskPSU tutorial web page.

  12. Is the e-mail address entered in the "From" line verified in any way?

AskPSU makes a quick scan to make sure the "From" line looks like an e-mail address: it looks for an "at" (@) and a "dot" (.) symbol, and rejects the submission if they are not there. However, it does not truly verify addresses, so users can send e-mail without using a real address.

  13. Can my form be used to send spam (unsolicited mail)?

There is a chance that malicious individuals could obtain the e-mail addresses from the form and send spam to them. Therefore, it is important that you obtain the permission of the addressees before adding their e-mail addresses to this form.

  14. Where is the best place to link to my AskPSU form from my organization's web page?

Place one or more links on your Web pages where visitors will easily find them. A good place to start would be to include a link in your standard contact information.

  15. My question isn't answered in this FAQ. Is there someone I can contact for more information?

Yes, please contact helpdesk@psu.edu for assistance.
