| Standing at the entrance to the trail we see that the grasses and weeds of the mowed lawn ecosystem are buried under a foot of accumulated snow. If we dig down through the snow we can see that right next to the soil and litter surface there is a space that is a few mm's to several cm's thick. This is the 'subnivean space' and it is important for many of the smaller animals of the trail ecosystem. Read more about subnivea |
