1. Degree-granting units have authority over degree requirements and any substitutions for them in accordance with Senate policies.
2. In practice, individuals who propose degree-requirement substitutions are members of the degree-granting units, or must be approved by the professor-in-charge of the unit.
3. Because it is critical for both individual students and for good practice in the University (e.g., advising, athletic eligibility, graduation checking), associate deans in each college are responsible to see that all substitutions, wherever and whenever made, are made by approved personnel, and are promptly entered into the student's degree audit. Procedures may differ in colleges, but the following practices will be common:
a. A process to ensure prompt data entry must exist.
b. General Education substitutions may be proposed by faculty or professional advisers, but must be approved under a process overseen by associate deans of the college in which the student is currently enrolled, or by the Executive Director of the Division of Undergraduate Studies, if the student is enrolled in DUS at the time of the substitution.
c. In accordance with Senate Policy 65-00, honors advisers have the authority to approve course substitutions for Schreyer scholars. Associate deans may oversee the process by which these substitutions are recorded.
4. When a student changes major, efforts should be made to apply all previous courses to the new degree programs, but that cannot be assured.
5. Approved substitutions should not be reversed for a student who remains in a major.
