John Paul Caponigro
February 26-June 2, 2002

A painter by training, John Paul Caponigro studied photography with his father, noted photographer Paul Caponigro. In 1992, he was introduced to computer-generated imagery during a residency at the Center for Creative Imaging in Camden, Maine. The experience encouraged Caponigro to consider the computer as a platform to bring together several disciplines, in particular drawing, painting, calligraphy, and numerous photographic processes. For the past ten years he has been producing poetic and exquisitely synthesized digital images that explore his interests in the formal relationship between image and text, and the thematic connection between nature and psychology.

The exhibition will feature Caponigro's most recent work, displayed together with the studies and sketches that helped to bring the final prints to fruition. The show has been organized in tandem with a lecture and a series of workshops that the artist will hold for students and faculty in Penn StateÕs School of Visual Arts during the spring 2002 semester.
