Special Exhibitions Gallery I

During the 1960s, Henry Geldzahler (1935-1994) oversaw the creation of the Department of Twentieth Century Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he subsequently organized the landmark exhibition New York Painting and Sculpture: 1940-1970. In 1967, he was named the first director of the Visual Art Program of the National endowment for the Arts, and he later became the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for the City of New York. Geldzahler championed young artists all his professional life, and when the AIDS epidemic struck, he poured his boundless energy into AIDS-related causes.

This portfolio, published by The Estate Project for Artists with AIDS, brings together works in honor of Geldzahler by several noted contemporary artists, including Louise Bourgeois, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, David Salle, and Frank Stella. Included in the exhibition is a video of Andy Warhol's 1964 film portrait Henry Geldzahler.
