Impressionism in Print: Etchings and Lithographs by Childe Hassam
May 22ÐSeptember 9, 2001

In 1915, at the age of 56, the prominent American Impressionist painter Childe Hassam (1859-1935) decided to explore the art of etching. An interest in lithography soon followed, and much of the artist's late career was devoted to graphic work. As a painter and a printmaker, Hassam remained devoted to the American scene and delighted in depicting New England churches, the weather-worn cottages of East Hampton, the picturesque harbors of Gloucester and Newport, and New York City streets enlivened by flag-draped buildings. This exhibition features twenty of the artist's prints ranging in date from the mid-teens through the early 1930s. Each of HassamÕs etchings and lithographs demonstrate an overriding interest in the effects of light and atmosphere on the appearance of objects and reveal considerable technical and formal exploration. Impressionism in Print was organized by the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester.

A children's guide for this exhibition is available at the security desk in the museum lobby.
