From Nature to the City: American Modern Works on Paper
September 26-February 18, 2001

During the first half of the twentieth century, American artists began moving away from academic traditions in favor of more personal and individualized approaches to the American scene. In their representations of nature and the urban environment many artists experimented with European modernism, incorporating Fauvist and Cubist strategies in their visions of American life. Emotions and personal expressions come to the fore in this exhibition of early modern American masters including John Marin, Arthur Dove, Charles Demuth, Emil Ganso, Oscar Bluemner and Louis Lozowick. This selection of prints, drawings, and watercolors has been drawn from the collection of the Palmer Museum as well as from the collections of Jean and Alvin Snowiss and James and Barbara Palmer.
