Power in my Hand: Works on Paper by Women Artists from the Permanent Collection
January 23ĞApril 29, 2001

"I took my power in my hand and went against the world…." These words were written by the nineteenth-century poet Emily Dickenson, yet they are appropriate for late twentieth-century women artists who strive to make their mark in the field of visual arts. Power in my Handhighlights this endeavor and demonstrates the Palmer Museum's continuing interest in collecting and recognizing the work of women artists through this presentation of twenty-three prints and drawings culled from the permanent collection.

Spanning a period of three decades, from the mid-1960s to the late 1990s, this rich selection of prints and drawings represents the work of artists working in such diverse genres as Abstract Expressionism, Op Art, and Photo-Realism. Lee Krasner (American, 1911-1984) became famous for her large abstract expressionist paintings, as well as her smaller collages and prints. Her 1974 serigraph, Embrace, was created to commemorate the spirit of the 1976 Olympics. Bridget Riley's (American, b. 1931) Study for a Painting,1965-66, includes handwritten notes by the artist, providing a glimpse into the artistic process of this well-known "Op" artist. These abstract works are balanced by several figural images, including My Children in Brittany,1974, by Franoise Gilot (French, b. 1921) and photo-realistic images such as Barbershop Mirror,1976, by Nancy McIntyre (American, b. 1950)
