Elmer Bischoff was associated with the school of realist expressionists (other exponents of which are Richard Diebenkorn and David Park). Bischoff received his M.A. in Fine Arts from the University of California at Berkeley where he began teaching in 1963. Usually a painter of the human figure, Bischoff's style reveals an affinity to the German and Austrian movements in expressionism as well as to the American abstract expressionists. The vivacity of his brush stroke, apparent in this large landscape as in his other works, induces a rich, painterly quality which enhances his excellence as a colorist.
