The Security and Traffic Unit is a uniformed division of the University Police consisting entirely of Penn State students. It is an integral part of the department, providing a variety of critical services to the University. Traffic control These services include traffic and crowd control at special events, property security, security patrols for summer conferences, parking enforcement, a downtown foot patrol in conjunction with the State College Borough Police, and giving assistance to University Police officers with various safety and security tasks.

The Security and Traffic Unit continues to provide a substantial amount of service to the University community. During this past year, the Unit provided nearly 50,000 hours of service. These hours are divided between support service to the University Police and service to other departments in the University.

Using students to supplement full-time police and security personnel has proven to be a cost effective way of providing many routine services while giving many students meaningful employment.  During the fall months, approximately 150 students are employed in the Security and Traffic Unit, while during the summer, the unit employs 60 to 80 students.

Each member of the Security and Traffic Unit goes through a background check and oral interview. The probationary Security and Traffic Officer will receive several hours of training in such topics as traffic control, security procedures, and department and University policies. At the end of a probation period, all new Security and Traffic Officers will be tested on materials covered in training. Upon successful completion of this test, the Security and Traffic Officer will then be able to train for other specific duties such as Parking Enforcement and a foot patrol in the downtown State College area. Employees of the Security and Traffic Unit always have a direct link to University Police officers through radio contact.

All employees in the Security and Traffic Unit are required to work all home football games providing essential traffic control and security around Beaver Stadium.

Award CeremonyIn the photo depicted to the right, Auxiliary Officer Jason Fitzwater receives an award from University Police for saving the life of a citizen while on duty by performing CPR.  The award was given by the Senior Vice President of Finance and Business, Gary Schultz.

There are many excellent reasons to become part of the Security and Traffic Unit. The primary benefits include a unique opportunity to work closely with the University Police and to gain valuable training that will prepare students for real-world employment following graduation. Service in the Security and Traffic Unit allows students the opportunity to contribute in a responsible and significant way to protecting their community. There are also excellent opportunities for advancement with specialized training positions and a staff of 12 student supervisors.

Students in the Security and Traffic unit can work up to 30 hours per week during Fall and Spring semester, and up to 40 hours per week in the summer; however, scheduling is flexible. There are opportunities to work a variety of details, including basketball games and concerts at the Bryce Jordan Center and sporting events at Rec Hall. Student employees cite the flexible scheduling as a distinct advantage of employment with this unit. Starting wage is $8.00 per hour until July 1, 2006. After July 1, 2006 starting wage will be $8.25.

Students already employed in the Security and Traffic Unit may be eligible to participate in an internship program with University Police.
