The Security and Traffic
Unit is a uniformed division of the University
Police consisting entirely of Penn State
students. It is an integral part of the
department, providing a variety of critical
services to the University.
These services include
traffic and crowd control at special events,
property security, security patrols for summer
conferences, parking enforcement, a downtown foot
patrol in conjunction with the State College Borough
Police, and giving assistance to University Police
officers with various safety and security tasks.
The Security and Traffic
Unit continues to provide a substantial amount of
service to the University community. During this
past year, the Unit provided nearly 50,000 hours
of service. These hours are divided between
support service to the University Police and
service to other departments in the
University.
Using students to
supplement full-time police and security
personnel has proven to be a cost effective way
of providing many routine services while giving
many students meaningful employment. During
the fall months, approximately 150 students are
employed in the Security and Traffic Unit, while
during the summer, the unit employs 60 to 80
students.
Each member of the Security
and Traffic Unit goes through a background check and
oral interview. The probationary Security and Traffic
Officer will receive several hours of training in such topics as traffic control, security procedures, and department and University policies.
At the end of a probation period, all new Security and Traffic
Officers will be tested on materials covered in training.
Upon successful completion of this test, the Security and Traffic Officer will then be able to train for other specific duties such as Parking Enforcement and a foot patrol in the downtown State College area.
Employees of the Security and Traffic Unit always have a direct link to University Police officers through radio contact.
All employees in the Security and
Traffic Unit are required to work all home football
games providing essential traffic control and security
around Beaver Stadium.

Senior Vice President of Finance and Business,
Gary Schultz.
There are many excellent reasons to become
part of the Security and Traffic Unit. The primary benefits
include a unique opportunity to work closely with the University
Police and to gain valuable training that will prepare students for
real-world employment following graduation. Service in the Security
and Traffic Unit allows students the opportunity to contribute in a
responsible and significant way to protecting their community. There
are also excellent opportunities for advancement with specialized
training positions and a staff of 12 student supervisors.
Students in the Security and Traffic unit
can work up to 30 hours per week during Fall and Spring semester,
and up to 40 hours per week in the summer; however, scheduling is
flexible. There are opportunities to work a variety of details,
including basketball games and concerts at the Bryce Jordan Center
and sporting events at Rec Hall. Student employees cite the
flexible scheduling as a distinct advantage of employment with
this unit. Starting wage is $8.00 per hour until July 1, 2006.
After July 1, 2006 starting wage will be $8.25.
Students already employed
in the Security and Traffic Unit may be eligible
to participate in an internship program with
University Police.
