Game #1 Ė 12:00PM (1st Round) (#3) Penn College vs. (#2) Mont Alto
Altoona, PA Ė In the first game of the 2011 PSUAC Championships, Penn State Mont Alto advanced to the winnerís bracket, by defeating Penn College, 6-5. Penn State Mont Alto took an early 2-0 lead over Penn College as Alicia Morgan (Mount Union/Mount Union, PA) and Sharielle Wray (Juniata/Orrstown, PA) each had RBI singles. Mont Alto threatened again in the 3rd inning, but a liner to short was snared by shortstop Chelsea Hewitt (Shippensburg Area/Shippensburg, PA) to strand runners at second and third base. Penn College responded in the 4th inning as Erin Bannon (Williamsport/Williamsport, PA) drilled an RBI double that scored Amber Eck (Jersey Shore Area/Williamsport, PA) to cut the Mont Alto lead in half, 2-1. Mont Alto answered in their half of the 4th as Kiera Fleagle (Carlisle/Gardeners, PA) hit an RBI double to extend the lead back to 3-1. Mont Alto tacked on another run to extend the lead to 4-1. Penn Collegeís Trisha Moser (Warrior Run/Watsontown, PA) tied the game up at four, when she laced a 2-RBI double with the bases loaded. Bannon then hit a RBI infield single to give Penn College a 5-4 lead. Mont Alto used small ball to plate two unearned runs in the 6th inning, and Helena DeShong (Shippensburg Area/Shippensburg, PA) made a spectacular catch in centerfield to seal the 6-5 victory for Mont Alto. Mont Altoís Kristyan Gates (Hanover/Hanover, PA) earned the complete game victory by allowing two earned runs on six hits, while walking two batters and striking out four. With the win, Mont Alto will face the winner of Penn State Beaver/Penn State Hazleton game at 6 p.m. Penn College will face the lose of the Penn State Beaver/Penn State Hazleton game at 4 p.m.
Game #2 Ė 2:00PM (1st Round) (#4) Penn State Hazleton vs. (#1) Penn State Beaver
Altoona, PA Ė Penn State Hazleton upended Penn State Beaver, 3-1, in 8 innings to advance to the winnerís bracket in the double elimination tournament. Both teams began slow offensively, but Penn State Beaver threatened in the 3rd inning, with the bases loaded and no outs. Sophomore Ashley Watkins (Seneca Valley/Cranberry Township) scorched a line drive back to the pitcher, Emily Roat (Warrior Run/Watsontown, PA), who snared the ball and converted into a double play. With two outs, Beaver loaded the bases again but could not score. Penn State Hazleton plated the first run of the game in the 5th inning, when first baseman Tiffany Donnelly (Hazleton Area/Hazleton, PA) hit a line drive single up the middle to give them a slim 1-0 lead. Beaver responded immediately in their half of the 5th, as Watkins doubled down the leftfield line, scoring Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) to tie the game at 1-1. Hazleton looked to go ahead in the 6th, but Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic/Beaver, PA) made a tremendous catch at the fence to get the second out of the inning. Starting pitcher, Alyssa Carver (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA), induced the final out for Beaver to keep the score tied. In the 6th, Beaverís Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) led off with a single up the middle. However, with one out, Hazletonís catcher Ashley Barron (Hoboken/Hoboken, NJ) matched Karpinskiís fine play by catching a pop-out and doubling up Raymond at first to end the inning. Beaver had an opportunity to end the game in the 7th inning as they loaded the bases up with two outs, but Roat forced out the game-winning run at home to force extra innings. In the 8th inning, Hazleton scored two runs, the second coming on an Alyssa Rodzewich (Hazleton Area/Freeland, PA) RBI infield single to put Hazleton up 3-1. Beaver loaded the bases up in their half of the 8th, but Roat got out of the bases loaded jam by as she struck out the next two Beaver batters and retired the next to earn the complete game win. Roat finished the game with nine strikeouts and allowed only one earned run, while walking four. The loss marks Beaverís first blemish in the conference this season. Beaver will play, Penn College in the loserís bracket game on Friday, April 29, 2011 at approximately 5 p.m. With the win, Penn State Hazleton advances to the winnerís bracket to face Penn State Mont Alto at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2011.
Game #3 Ė 4:45PM (Elimination Game) (#3) Penn College vs. (#1) Penn State Beaver
Altoona, PA Ė The Penn College Wildcats took advantage of a timely hitting to eliminate the #1 seed Penn State Beaver Lady Lions from the PSUAC Championships by a score of 6-1. Penn College struck in the first inning as Erin Bannon (Williamsport/Williamsport, PA) hit a seeing-eye-single to right field past the dive of second baseman, Lauren Pier (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) to give the Lady Wildcats a quick 1-0 lead. Beaver responded in their half of the 1st inning, as freshman Myranda Raymond (Brashear/Pittsburgh, PA) hit a two-out RBI single to tie the game at one apiece. In the 3rd inning, Penn College plated its second run of the game on a Chelsea Hewitt (Shippensburg Area/Shippensburg, PA) RBI single to rightfield to give the Lady Wildcats a 2-1 advantage. In the 5th inning, Penn College took control as they scrapped their way to four runs to extend their lead to 6-1. With the bases loaded and no outs, pitcher Lacy Lose (Jersey Shore Area/Avis, PA) hit an RBI single to left for the first run of the inning. Sophomore Amber Eck (Jersey Shore Area/Williamsport, PA) hit a sac fly to right for the second run and Desiree Buffington Upper Dauphin Area/Pillow, PA) added another RBI on a ball to short. Beaver allowed another run on two costly throwing errors to cap the Wildcat charge. Beaver could not muster any offense in the final two frames and fell to Penn College, 6-1. In the win, Lose went seven strong innings, scattered seven hits, struck out three and walked only two Beaver batters. The Lady Wildcats were led by Sabrina Reynolds (Warrior Run/Muncy, PA) who went 2-3 and scored two runs. For Beaver, Alyssa Carver (New Brighton/New Brighton, PA) and Jamie Karpinski (Quigley Catholic/Beaver, PA) each had two hits. The Lady Wildcats will face the loser of the Penn State Mont Alto vs. Penn State Hazleton game at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2011. Despite being eliminated from the PSUAC Championship Tournament, Penn State Beaverís season will continue as they received an at-large birth to the USCAA National Tournament in Akron, Ohio. In addition, Mont Alto has also received a bid to the USCAA National Tournament, which leaves Penn College and Penn State Hazleton battling for the PSUAC title and the right to receive the PSUAC automatic birth.
Game #4 Ė 10:00AM (Winnerís Bracket Game) (#4) Penn State Hazleton vs. (#2) Penn State Mont Alto
Altoona, PA Ė Penn State Mont Alto earned an important victory in the winnerís bracket game to advance to the championship round, needing only one more victory to secure the 2011 PSUAC Softball Championship. Mont Alto struck in the 1st inning, as Helena DeShong (Shippensburg/Shippensburg, PA) and Sharielle Wray (Juniata/Orrstown, PA) each had RBI singles to give Mont Alto a 2-0 lead. Mont Alto upped their lead to 3-0 in the 3rd inning, as they scored on a pass ball. In the 4th, Hazletonís Alyssa Rodzewich (Hazleton/Freeland, PA) hit a solo homer to leftcenter to cut the lead to 3-1. Hazleton tied the game at 3-3 in the 5th inning, when Amanda Collins (Forest City/Forest City, PA) and Krystin Baker (Delaware Valley/Dingmans Ferry) each had RBI singles. Mont Alto reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, when Amber Zinobile (Southern Huntington/Three Spring, PA) slapped an RBI single up the middle, which scored DeShong, giving Mont Alto a slim 4-3 advantage. Mont Altoís Kristyn Gates (Hanover Senior/Hanover, PA) retired Hazleton in order in the 6th and 7th innings to give Mont Alto the 4-3 victory. Gates earned a completed victory, allowed three earned runs, seven hits, walked none and struck out seven. In the loss, Hazletonís Collins and Brooke Hess (Hamburg Area/Hamburg, PA) each had two hits apiece, while starting pitcher Emily Roat (Warrior Run/Watsontown, PA) went six innings, allowed four earned runs, walked four and struck out seven. With the win, Mont Alto advances to the Championship Game at 2 p.m. Hazleton will now face Penn College in the loserís bracket game. The winner will earn the right to face Penn State Mont Alto.
Game #5 Ė 12:09PM (#4) Penn State Hazleton vs. (#3) Penn College (Loserís Bracket Game)
Altoona, PA Ė Penn State Hazleton scored six runs in the gameís first four innings to clinch a spot in the PSUAC Championship game for the second consecutive year, as they defeated Penn College, 6-2. Penn State Hazleton Lady Lions put the pressure on the Penn College Lady Wildcats from the start as Brooke Hess began the game with a leadoff single then stole second base. Amanda Collins (Forest City/Forest City, PA) reached on a error and then Krystin Baker (Delaware Valley/Dingmans Ferry) followed with a single to load the bases. Hazleton eventually plated two unearned runs to give them a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning. In the 3rd inning, Hazleton extended their lead to 4-0. Hazleton scored two runs, one due to a Alyssa Rodzewich (Hazleton Area/Freeland) sac fly and the other run was unearned. However, Penn College responded with a two spot of their own. Junior Erin Bannon (Williamsport Area/Williamsport, PA) connected on a two-our 2-RBI double to cut the lead to 4-2. Hazleton then answered with two runs in top of the 4th inning, as Collins and Hess each hit RBI singles to regain a four run cushion. Hazletonís Emily Roat (Warrior Run/Watsontown, PA) did not allow any more damage as she went the distance earning a complete game win, her second victory of the tournament. It was also her third complete game of the tournament. For the game, Hess went 3-4 with three runs scored and a RBI. Baker also went 2-4 with two runs scored. Rodzewich added two RBI for Hazleton. Penn College was led by Bannon who went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Penn State Hazleton will now play Penn State Mont Alto at 2:30PM for the 2011 PSUAC Softball Championship. Hazleton will have to defeat Mont Alto twice to earn the crown.
Game #6 Ė 2:35PM (Championship Game) (#4) Penn State Hazleton vs. (#2) Penn State Mont Alto
Altoona, PA Ė Penn State Mont Alto defeated defending Champion Penn State Hazleton, 7-4, to earn their first PSUAC championship in over a decade. Mont Alto took the lead from the start and never looked back. They took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, as Kaylee Poole (James Buchanan/St. Thomas, PA) led the game off with a walk and scored on a Kiera Fleagle (Carlisle/Gardners, PA) RBI groundout. Fleagle tallied another RBI with one out in the 3rd inning as she ripped a line drive past Hazletonís starting pitcher, Emily Roat (Warrior Run/Watsontown, PA) to give Mont Alto a 2-0 advantage. Hazleton battled back in the 4th inning, as catcher Ashley Barron (Hoboken/Hoboken, NJ) walloped a two-out 2-RBI double to deep left field to tie the game up at 2-2. Mont Alto seized control in the 4th as they plated four runs on a Poole RBI single and a two-out 2-RBI single by Helena DeShong (Shippensburg/Shippensburg, PA), to centerfield. Mont Alto also scored another run on DeShongís hit due to a fielding error. Hazleton rallied in the 5th inning, as Brooke Hess (Hamburg Area/Hamburg, PA) stroked a 2-RBI double to leftfield to close the gap to 6-4. Mont Alto answered with a run in the 5th inning, courtesy of another Poole RBI to extend the lead to 7-4, which proved to be the final. Kristyn Gates (Hanover Senior/Hanover, PA) earned her third win of the tournament throwing a complete game in the process. She threw seven innings of five strikeout, five hit ball. Fleagle went 2-4, with 3 RBI, while Poole was 1-3 scoring three runs and knocking in three herself.
Mont Alto will now head to Akron, Ohio for the 2011 USCAA National Tournament.
