STRATEGY 1
Math Tutoring
The Math Tutoring program seeks to increase retention of mathematics students through a combination of instructor intervention, supplemental instruction, one-to-one tutoring assistance, online tutorials, and most importantly, personalized tutoring in study-skill techniques.
The program is designed for students needing remedial attention in college algebra, trigonometry, and calculus I (i.e., Math 21, 22, and 140). The goal is to encourage and empower students who need assistance and relieve feelings of anxiety and failure.
Crucial elements of the program include professional tutors as well as the selection and training of student tutors, diagnostic exams, online progress reports (OPR), and supplementary mathematics courses. As part of the OPR (online progress reporting) system, mathematics instructors will be able to identify students having issues with attendance and/or academic performance during the fourth and the seventh weeks of the semester. These students will receive the OPR via e-mail explaining why they have been selected and what tools are available to help them succeed.
The content of the tutoring program will be accessible through ANGEL, Penn State’s online course management system, in order to provide universal access to all fifteen coalition campuses.
