Other School Federal Perkins Loan Deferment Process
To initiate the deferment process for Perkins Loans that you have borrowed from schools other than Penn State, follow these three steps:
Obtain contact information for previous schools that have awarded you a Perkins Loan by accessing the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)
- Log onto NSLDS using your federal personal identification number (Federal Student Aid PIN).
- Select Financial Aid Review.
- In the Loan Summary, select the yellow button beside each Perkins Loan listed to view details and school contact information.
Contact the school and ask for the name and address of the Perkins Loan servicing area or agency.
- Inform the service area or agency that you are currently enrolled at least half-time and would like to request an in-school deferment form.
- Verify that your contact information is accurate.
Complete the in-school deferment form and forward it to the Office of the University Registrar at Penn State.
- Ask the Registrar to attach official enrollment verification to the form.
- The Registrar's office will return the deferment form and verification to the school from which you previously borrowed a Perkins Loan.
You are responsible for any delinquency or default on a Perkins Loan. If you do not properly defer previous Perkins Loans, you run the risk of having negative credit information reported to credit bureaus and possibly losing access to future federal student aid. In some instances, you could forfeit student aid that has already been disbursed to you, resulting in you owing a large balance on your student account.
You will need to contact previous Perkins Loan servicers/agencies regarding deferment each semester that you continue half-time enrollment.
