Dear Members, It gives me great pleasure to announce the hiring of Penn State Tennis Center's new Head Tennis Professional Doug Schoenly. As many of you know, Doug was a four year varsity player here at PSU, as well as the Assistant Men's Tennis Coach for the past four years. For the last three summers, Doug has been the Director of Tennis at Toftree's Resort. Doug's first day will be June 12, 2000. We are very fortunate to have someone of Doug's caliber join our staff. Welcome aboard Doug! The first leg of the PSU Grand Prix was held May 20-21, 2000, and despite some weather challenges was a huge success. There was plenty of great tennis, food, and fun. The results of all the divisions as well as the point standings are in this month's newsletter. Those of you who were out of town or unable to play the May's event, I encourage you to sign up for the June Grand Prix, scheduled for June 24-25, 2000. A few helpful hints for the Grand Prix... If you want to play two divisions, be prepared to play a lot of tennis over the weekend, especially if we have large divisions of play. Also, be ready to play on either hard or clay courts. If you play your first match on clay, it does not necessarily mean you will play your next match on clay. There is a a lot of tennis to be played and we have to use whatever courts are available at the time or your scheduled match. We will try to use the clay courts whenever possible. Renovations to the building began on May 24. The renovations will involve a new roof, sides and entrance way addition, as well as repairs to the inside ceiling. In addiiton to the building renovations starting, we will also be starting irrigation renovations to our above ground irrigation system in the very near future. The irrigation renovations will consist of adding additional watering heads on each court as well as dividing the watering times into three stations. The irrigation improvements will dramatically improve the playability of the clay courts. The clay courts will be closed for approximately one week once the renovations begin. As you can see, there is a lot going on a the Tennis Center to make your experience more pleasurable. If you have any questions or concerns please stop by my office or give me a call at 865-1381. It is a pleasure serving you. Sincerely, Eric
