 The Importance of Advising

Graham SpanierAdvisers can and should do much more than help students to make smart choices about courses and majors. Academic advisers should encourage their students to explore the wonderful experiences Penn State offers. They can enable students to develop new views of their world and especially of themselves.

The University offers many sources of ideas and information. Students should, of course, visit regularly with their assigned advisers, but they should also talk with other faculty members, with staff, and with other students. This Web site—which we work to keep timely and accurate—suggests other published and online sources.

Penn State offers every student the chance to craft a first-rate education. I hope each of our students can use the University's many advising resources to become a skillful learner for life.
