The Role of the Adviser
On Advising
“Effective academic advising requires a partnership between the advisee and
adviser. An effective adviser helps advisees plan their academic programs, select appropriate
extracurricular activities, and identify internships and/or summer work experiences to confirm
and prepare them for their chosen careers. Development of alternative goals more suitable to
the student's interests and abilities may be necessary. The effective adviser helps advisees
achieve their personal and professional goals and potential.”

Erskine Cash received the University's 1999 Excellence in Advising Award. He has also received
the College of Agricultural Sciences Outstanding Educator Award (1995 and 1997); the College of
Agricultural Sciences Alumni Association Excellence in Advising Award (1991); the Gamma Sigma
Delta Teaching Award (1984); and the AMOCO Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award, now the
Atherton Award, (1979).
My Role as an Adviser
Faculty members at Penn State advise students as an important
component of their scholarship in teaching and learning. The primary purpose of
academic advising is to provide effective guidance so that students can maximize the
educational opportunities available at Penn State and make critical decisions regarding
education, career, and life goals.
Successful academic advising depends on the ability of the adviser and advisee to recognize the nature of the academic advising process, address specific components of academic advising, and together be responsible in the advising process.
