 Programs Coordinators

Programs coordinators manage the four programs of DUS in cooperation with the colleges. To meet specific needs, the coordinator role may be tailored to the college. At the request of the associate dean, a coordinator may become involved in college functions that range from recruitment to graduation. Programs coordinators

DUS Programs Coordinators provide college advising programs that may include the following:
  • Act as college primary contact to faculty and professional advisers at all locations to aid in their advising of students enrolled in or seeking to enroll in the college
  • Coordinate and participate in campus and college visits and meetings for students changing campus
  • Develop curriculum guides for students and advisers
  • Advise students who are on academic warning
  • Coordinate activities to help students explore majors within specific colleges
  • Coordinate information for advisers to help students who are unable to enter their major of choice
  • Coordinate first-year seminars
  • Maintain listservs for students enrolled in the college
  • Advise upper-division students regarding their progress toward graduation
  • Coordinate internships, participate in the University Internship Committee, and serve on the Penn State Washington, D.C. Internship Advisory Board
  • Advise student clubs, interest houses, and organizations

DUS Programs Coordinators create general advising programs that may include the following:
  • Coordinate advising for students moving across academic units of the University through a system of referrals
  • Coordinate DUS conferences to provide information and professional development for university advisers
  • Develop college Web sites for advising
  • Develop literature that describes the college and its programs
  • Provide advising to prospective students and their families and to students seeking concurrent majors, re-enrollment, reinstatement, and sequential majors
  • Develop modules for eLion
  • Participate in recruitment events organized by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions
  • Visit high schools and attend college fairs to recruit students for the college and the University

DUS Programs Coordinators provide academic information that may include the following:

  • Coordinate publication of college advising guides for students and other advisers
  • Act as liaison to such offices as Undergraduate Admissions, University Registrar, and Career Services, providing them with materials and presentations
  • Create videotapes of college activities and programs shown to various constituencies
  • Coordinate presentation by faculty and undergraduate program directors from the college to attendees of DUS and admissions conferences
  • Coordinate the college presentation to the annual admissions office counselors' day at University Park
  • Present the college to high school counselors at meetings held at various Penn State campuses

DUS Programs Coordinators contribute to FTCAP that may include the following:
  • Collaborate with other DUS advisers to plan and organize segments of the program, such as group information sessions and family meetings
  • Present information about the college to summer staff working in the program though written material and live presentations
  • Train college faculty and staff advisers advising in the program
  • Develop materials for use by students in the general program (such as the Web site for general education) and in the college portion
  • Present the college to students and family members
  • Counsel new students in individual interviews
  • Present the University to family members and hold family conferences
  • Coordinate information about students to departments within the college
  • Assist enrolling students in scheduling their first courses at the University

DUS Programs Coordinators participate in other DUS programs that may include the following:
  • Collaborate with faculty and college administrators to establish college advising policy
  • Serve on the University Advising Council
  • Assess advising in the college
  • Coordinate training activities for faculty and staff of the college that relate to advising, first-year seminars, and curricular matters
  • Serve on Faculty Senate committees that relate to advising and curricular matters
  • Use information technology to develop Web sites and presentations for meetings and conferences, for example, college Web sites, eLion modules, presentations for various constituencies, and advising workshops
  • Write monographs, book chapters, and books related to advising, and collaborate on Web-based materials for use by faculty advisers, such as the Center for Excellence in Academic Advising
  • Coordinate and participate in advising programs for special populations, such as Bunton-Waller and Schreyer Honors students
  • Inform the profession through national and regional conference participation, publications, and leadership positions in national and regional organizations

DUS Programs Coordinators contribute to the University's mission that may include the following:
  • Teach courses in various disciplines
  • Research topics related to advising and other disciplines
  • Research institutional issues such as retention and assessment of advising
  • Serve on departmental, college, and University committees such as the Fulbright Selection Committee, the Faculty Selection Committee of the Schreyer Honors College, the Administrative Council on Undergraduate Education, and the School of Theatre Undergraduate Committee
  • Serve as leaders of professional organizations and honorary societies such as Phi Delta Kappa
