First-Year Testing, Counseling and Advising Program (FTCAP) FTCAP is the first stage of academic advising for first-year students in all colleges and at all campuses at Penn State. Established in 1957, the First-Year Testing, Counseling and Advising Program (FTCAP) gives all entering first-year students (including provisional students) the opportunity to examine their academic abilities, interests, and educational plans before their first semester of classes. FTCAP is a comprehensive program of placement testing in English, mathematics, and chemistry; individualized educational planning; and academic advising. FTCAP provides students with a basic understanding of what will be expected of them at Penn State and how their particular abilities and interests may fit with one or more of the University's majors. As part of their participation in FTCAP, all new students are asked to complete an Educational Planning Survey. This survey, which includes questions about the student's background and interests, was developed by the Division of Undergraduate Studies to facilitate students' educational development and in establishing programs to foster effective academic advising. Students' families are encouraged to attend the advising component of FTCAP. More than 10,000 students and 15,000 family members participate in FTCAP each year.
