The Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP), located only at the University Park campus, is designed to assist selected students to overcome significant economic, educational, and personal challenges as they strive to earn their undergraduate degrees. To enroll in the program, a student must qualify for admission through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and must display the potential to succeed in college-level work and a high level of motivation to pursue a college education. To determine whether a University Park student is in CSP, authorized advisers can use ISIS screen AUZU (press F9): "EOP" will be indicated in the "RESVSPACE" field.

CSP consists of academic support services including developmental course work, tutoring, and academic/career counseling. In concert with these services, the CSP staff encourages CSP students to work with their assigned college advisers. The goal is to help students to develop their basic academic skills and interests and to gain the competence and confidence needed to cope successfully with the academic rigors of college.

CSP students are admitted to the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and receive (1) instruction designed to strengthen English, mathematics, reading, and learning skills and (2) tutorial help with class work when necessary. Free tutorial services are available starting in the first year and continuing until the student graduates.

COURSE WORK

CSP provides course work in mathematics, reading, and learning skills. Placement in the following courses is determined by the placement action indicated on the student's Profile of Academic Abilities and/or by CSP testing: ENGL 004 Basic Writing, ENGL 005 Tutoring in Composition, MATH 002 Elementary Geometry with Problem Solving, MATH 097C Intermediate Algebra with Problem Solving, LL ED 005 Introduction to Critical Literacy, and LL ED 010 Advanced Introduction to Critical Literacy.

Grades and Credits

Grades earned in these courses are included in the student's grade-point average, and credits earned are included in cumulative and total credits. However, credits earned in ENGL 004, ENGL 005, MATH 002, and MATH 097C cannot be applied toward satisfying baccalaureate degree program requirements. Credits earned in LL ED 005 and LL ED 010 may count toward the basic minimum requirement for graduation as electives, with the approval of the student's major academic department.

The University may make changes in policies, procedures, educational offerings, and requirements at any time. Please consult a Penn State academic adviser for more detailed information.
