The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal

Happy Anniversary!

Diane Greenfield, general editor of The Mentor

Today, January 1, 2000, is the first anniversary of The Mentor: An Academic Advising Journal.

Published only on the Web, it was created to provide a mechanism for the rapid dissemination of new ideas about academic advising and to encourage conversation about advising issues. Because of your contributions, it has been remarkably successful in achieving these goals.

The Mentor is reaching a large audience. It has received more than 10,000 hits since going on line. You, the readers and writers, have been exploring a wide variety of advising issues. Twenty-three articles have been published on subjects ranging from developmental advising to the Columbine tragedy. And the monthly “Advising Forum” topics have stimulated enthusiastic discussion.

You are participating in a nationwide conversation by reading The Mentor, submitting articles, and responding to other people's ideas. Contributions have come from sixty-six diverse institutions, from community colleges to large universities, throughout the United States. It is often said that technology is dehumanizing. But through The Mentor, we are meeting, talking to, and learning from people we might never have met without it.

This is your publication. It would not exist without your contributions. So keep those articles and responses coming. Continue the conversation!

Diane Greenfield is coordinator of communications for the Division of Undergraduate Studies at Penn State.
