Advising for General EducationAdvising for General Education (2005), 34 pages, $4.00

Marion Schwartz

Exploring the notion of how we acculturate college students to the ideas represented by curricular schemes called general education, the core, the liberal arts and sciences component of American degrees, Marion Schwartz's essay shows us how to consider the values represented in these schemes.

Siting her argument in the historical context of breadth of learning for the sake of citizenship and love of learning, she first discusses academic advisers learning the scheme and its language at their own institutions. She then discusses skills in self-expression and quantification, exploring curricula through general education, critical thinking, diversity, civic engagement, integration of knowledge, and character and contemplation. Each section challenges academic advisers to assist students in learning as they take general education courses and participate in academic life.

Schwartz includes activities and scenarios academic advisers can use with their students. Some involve conversations: “Ask your students what freedom means to them.” Some involve going beyond discussion: “Encourage your students to read newspapers. . . . Engage them in conversation about public questions. . . .” Some engage them outside classrooms: “Encourage your students to join a club engaged in public service.” The essay ends with scenarios to engage students at a higher level of discourse and learning. In essence the essay is a syllabus for teaching students the values represented by general education.
