eLion: Penn State's Comprehensive Web-Based Academic Advising SystemeLion: Penn State's Comprehensive Web-Based Academic Advising System (2006), 62 pages, $12.00

Holly S. Hart, Ruth B. Hussey, Michael J. Leonard, James Levin, Susan M. Winck

eLion is an award-winning, Web-based system for students, advisers, and faculty at the Pennsylvania State University. Through eLion, students can contact their assigned academic advisers, participate in expert-based interactive advising sessions, register for classes, and access their grades, degree audits, and other academic records. Professional and faculty academic advisers can access rosters of their assigned advisees, view students' academic records, correspond directly with their advisees, record notes of advising contacts, and obtain additional information to assist them in their advising responsibilities.

This monograph focuses on the impact of the eLion system on academic advising. Part One details the academic advising structure of Penn State and outlines the pedagogical philosophy and vision for eLion. Part Two provides an overview of the academic advising information, guidance, and learning management properties of the eLion system in the current stage of its development. Part Three provides a description of the historical processes and organizational arrangements used in the development of eLion. Part Four addresses the likely directions and future development of eLion's academic advising information and management-related features. The appendices contain details of the eLion developmental project as well as statistics on the use of eLion.
