Registration Tips

  • When can you register? Check your degree audit on eLion to find out what date you can start registering for the upcoming semester. On that day, you can access registration on eLion at 12:01 a.m. The system closes down at 3:00 a.m. and is up again at 7:00 a.m. Remember, this is the first day you can register, not the last. Keep trying! You can change your schedule through the drop/add deadline.

  • Class full? Try these strategies.

  • Can't get into a section that seems to have space? If a course appears to have space available in the Schedule of Courses but you're not able to add it, it's probably because that section is actually full but the Schedule of Courses hasn't been updated recently. Keep trying!

  • “Cross-listed” courses? When a course is cross-listed, as indicated in the University Bulletin course description [e.g., SOC 013 (GS) (CLJ)], spaces are set aside in multiple departments (in this example, the Sociology department and the Crime, Law, & Justice department). If there are no spaces left in one of the departments, try the cross-listed department(s).

  • Course controls? If a course you would like to schedule is listed in the Schedule of Courses as having course controls, click on the “View Controls” link to find out who can schedule it. If you're unable to schedule a controlled course, call the department to ask what you might do to schedule it. Department phone numbers and locations are listed in the Schedule of Courses and in the Penn State Department Directory.

  • Error message? If you get an error message when you enter all your course numbers in the eLion Registration application, re-enter the six-digit schedule number for the course you didn't get to find out why you couldn't schedule it.

  • eLion problems? If you're having trouble registering on eLion, contact the Registrar's office.

  • Looking for particular kind of course? If you're looking for a certain kind of course or one that meets at a particular time, you can search for it using the Advanced Course Search option in the Schedule of Courses. You can search for the following kinds of courses: General Education, Web, honors, U.S. Cultures, and International Cultures. You can also specify start/ending date/time and/or days of the week. The search can list either all sections/courses that meet your criteria or just those that are open.

  • Looking for a specific course? By selecting a course abbreviation and number (e.g., ENGL 015) or the first letter of a course (e.g., D–H), the Main Course Search in the Schedule of Courses will list all of the sections of that course that are being offered.

  • Dropping and adding? When revising your schedule, you might want to drop a course/section only if you can be sure that it is possible to add an alternative course/section. Go ahead! On eLion, the simultaneous request for drop and add is an all-or-nothing activity. Your record isn't changed unless both actions occur.

  • Need help? If you're having trouble registering, contact your adviser.
