Commission Projects: Electronic Publication Awards 2000 Electronic Publication Award Nominations/Winners Award-winning publications were honored at the special Awards Presentation and Reception, Saturday, October 7, 2000, during the annual NACADA conference in Orlando, FL. Highlights: "The Mentor" is a free electronic publication about academic advising in higher education. The publication's goal is to provide a mechanism for the rapid dissemination of new ideas about advising and for ongoing discourse about advising issues. Toward this goal, articles in the journal are published continuously in a "current issue in progress." The journal, which is cataloged by the Library of Congress, reaches an international audience. Readers are encouraged to contribute articles, respond to published articles, and submit opinions on topics in a monthly advising forum. Other features of the journal include a complete archive of past articles and forum opinions, multiple indexes, full-text search, free update notification service (listserv), guest book, list of contributing institutions, and a calendar of events. Highlights: Guide to Academic Success, Student Life and Resources Highlights: The Arts Academic Advising web site provides information on program requirements for the Faculty of Arts. It features a comprehensive FAQ section and an online version of our QuickstARTS brochure. Other features include information on access to advising services, links to Student Services and commonly used forms available for download. Highlights: Ralphie's Info Center includes "just-in-time" information delivered on the front page, Ralphie's Guide to Student Life, and the Ask Ralphie question and answer service. The "just-in-time" information changes every few weeks based on information students currently need. Ralphie's Guide includes official university policies and information on offices, plus student life information such as bus schedules and recreation opportunities. If students don't find the information they need in the center, they can search through the Ask Ralphie archives, or ask the "buffalo" a question of their own. Highlights: To enhance departmental advising and as part of Western's accountability plan, Western Washington University recently adopted a Departmental Advising Model which requires that departments create advising web pages--a separate link from Department Home Pages. The Sociology Department Advising Web Page is serving as Western's prototype. Features include Contact information re: advisor(s) on index page; information for prospective students; information for currently enrolled students; FAQs; links to Academic Advising Center, Career Services Center, Student Support Services. Optional features included in this prototype: What's New (Newsletter); Plans of Study; Career Options; Registration Information; and links to other resources. The web pages were designed by Linda Clark, Undergraduate Advisor in the Sociology Department, along with a committee of advisors and students from various departments on the campus. The committee reviewed web sites from other U.S. institutions and created a list of "best practices," and also worked with student focus groups to determine students' needs. The result is this prototype--still a work in progress-- and other departments at Western are currently working on their web pages. The goal is to launch as many new pages as possible by Fall 2000.
