Commission Projects: Electronic Publication Awards 2001 Electronic Publication Award Nominations/Winners Award-winning publications were honored at the special Awards Presentation and Reception, Saturday, October 13, 2001, during the annual NACADA conference in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The site highlights listed below were provided by the nominators. Highlights: Design, ease of use, explanation of degree programs, access to degree program worksheets. Highlights: A compendium of information, resources and links to help advisors in General College, a developmental education unit in the University of Minnesota, do their job of preparing students for transfer into any of a dozen different degree-granting colleges or professional schools at the university. Includes material on academic policies and procedures, resources for professional development, information on using computers and information technology, and links to counseling and study skills resources on and off campus. Highlights: Academic Advising and Other Advising Resources encompass the largest percentage of this site. The "Enrolled Student" section under Academic Advising will be most often used. Highlights: Advising & Evaluations Info Sheet., "Graduation Requirements" are outlined for students, Go to "Graduation Requirements" > "Testing Requirements" > "Testing Requirements (Competencies) Decision Trees." Also check out the "Directory of Major Advisors," a listing of all advisors at SDSU! (Please begin at this web site and it will take you through to the test student where you will input "student ID = 4444T and password = 9999".) Highlights: Students receive initial newsletter which contains the web site address and how to log on to the system. Once they log on, they are able to view information regarding the actual orientation, parking, hotels, schedule of the day, testing, directions etc. A great feature is once they fill out the form and select "accept entry," they receive a immediate confirmation via the web which states their confirmation date, time, place etc. We also have links to UCSD catalog, schedule of classes and various other important sites. Other Nominations Academic advising Lifesaver (no. 6): Algonquin College Highlights: Go to the "Resources" drop-down menu at the top of the screen and click on current support materials, then select the Lifesaver series, #6 (Academic Advising). The lifesaver publication is part of a series outlining various student success-oriented programs and services. It is focused as well as practical, can be be used with various internal and external stakeholders. It has proven to be a very useful promotional tool, which is descriptive of the institutional support structure, training objectives, relevant needs analyses and in-house research related to advising practices at Algonquin College. This information is brought together in a well-written and succinct format. It is a beacon to our community. Bits and Bytes: A Technology, Arts and Media Newsletter: University of Colorado at Boulder Highlights: http://www.colorado.edu/atlas/tamnews/ http://www.colorado.edu/atlas COSAM (College of Sciences and Mathematics) Semester Information: Auburn University Highlights: This site allowed the students and advisors in our college to make the transition from quarters to semesters seamlessly. Some of the best features are as follows: 1) The "Transition to Semester Planners" allowed students to concurrently see both the current quarter and proposed semester curriculum models listed in two columns, course by course. As a result, each student could effectively plan his/her individual transition to the semester. Advisors will use this section of the site until all students who started on quarters have graduated. 2) The "Guidelines for Breaking Sequences" portion allowed students to avoid potential problems such as those associated with transitioning from 3-course sequences to 2-course sequences. 3) The "Long Range Schedules" allowed students to see what was being offered the last year of quarters and the first year of semesters. 4) The "Stuff You Need to Know" section provided answers to many of the students' questions before they even knew what to ask. All of this empowered the students to take the responsibility for making the transition to the semester system. This site soon became the envy of all of the colleges on campus. In fact, many of the other colleges directed their students to our site. Students and advisors from other colleges commented, "We wish we had something like this." We are now beginning our second semester. The real value of this site is manifested in the fact that not a SINGLE ONE of our students has had a significant problem associated with the transition! Finally, let me point out that this site is neither glitzy nor does it have lots of graphics. This was done deliberately to expedite students downloading the material via modems. CSUN Times: Colorado State University (PDF file) Highlights: This is an online newsletter for our distance MBA students. It was created in an effort to increase the communication and community with our distance students. The first issue was produced in June 2000 and is posted every three months. All of the issues are available at: http://www.biz.colostate.edu/mba/distance/CSUNTimes/CSUNTimes.htm All editions feature a student, faculty and staff member profile as well as information about the university, updates on policies, and the services that are available to distance students. We also try to add a little humor for the students. Exploratory Student Resources website: Indiana University Highlights: The "Exploratory Student Resources" website is a comprehensive major exploration site that is provided by the Exploratory Student Resources program in the University Division at Indiana University. The website is designed for use by exploratory undergraduate students as well as the academic advisors who advise those students. The site provides guidance and all the resources needed (or directions to find the needed resources) for an exploratory student to conduct a thorough exploration and decision-making process in order to make a good decision about their choice of major. Site highlights include: Frequently Asked Questions, a decision-making flowchart, Fall and Spring semester checklists as well as an "Anytime" checklist of exploration activities, a complete guide to all the resources and services available on campus for major exploration, information about course selection while exploratory, and information pages about every major at the university. The site also has the capability for the user to search for majors by their interests, a "College Majors of Famous People" page, and a collection of real stories ("IU's Xploratory Files") told by former exploratory students. Some of the best features of the website are in the design: colorful, motivational, easy navigation, fun to use, and informative. The site provides everything necessary for a student to conduct a successful major exploration or change of major. Links to other campus resources such as Career Counseling, the Individualized Major Program at IU, and the Majors & Careers Series, as well as links to several helpful sites outside the IU campus are included. This website provides all the direction and tools needed to guide exploratory students toward a timely and successful choice of major. General Education: So That's What it Is: Penn State University Highlights: The site provides an introduction to general education for new and returning students at Penn State. Links connect the students to authoritative sources for requirements and lists, but the tone is playful. A complex subject is made clear and interesting through appealing visuals, clear navigation, and imaginative concepts (e.g., a game with playing cards that allow students to "win" with different combinations of general education courses, depending on what exceptions they choose to exercise). Pre-Health Professions Advising: University of Florida Highlights: Simple navigation with an appealing design, Health Professions Handbook, and Other Links Undergraduate Advising Contact Database Suite: University of California, San Diego (PowerPoint demonstration) Highlights: The Undergraduate Advising Contact Database Suite serves two purposes: (1) it allows students to sign up electronically for advising services, and (2) it serves as a database for information regarding contact between students and academic staff. University Advising Center: University of Texas at Arlington Highlights: Tells all about the UAC, with pictures of the advisors. Best Links the Advising Association (UTAAA) and NACADA University Advising Center Homepage: Wayne State University Highlights: Rich mix of content for curriculum advising and transition issues and links for student achievement and career direction. A Whole New Ballgame New Student Orientation: Oklahoma City Community College Highlights: College is a whole new ballgame and the team at OCCC has developed this "cyber coach" to help new students relax and have a great season. Includes links to campus resources, tips on how to be a successful student, parking secrets and more. Revised June 17, 2004 |
